How Each Tool Actually Feels in Real Use

Mailchimp is still the go-to for a lot of small businesses just getting started. The drag-and-drop editor is simple enough that even non-technical owners can create good-looking emails quickly. The free plan is generous, and the paid plans don’t jump up too fast. In 2026, their automation has improved, but it still feels more like a solid newsletter tool than a heavy-duty automation machine. Many owners I talk to like it because it’s familiar and doesn’t overwhelm them.

Klaviyo: If you sell physical products or run an online store, Klaviyo often feels like the best choice. It’s built to track actual revenue from your emails, so you can see exactly how much money each campaign brings in. The automation is powerful,  including abandoned cart flows, win-back sequences, and smart segmentation based on what people actually buy. It can feel a bit complex at first, but once you get the hang of it, the results are impressive. A lot of ecommerce owners tell me it pays for itself within the first couple of months.

ConvertKit was made for people who create content, such as bloggers, coaches, course creators, and newsletter writers. It’s built around building relationships over time instead of pushing hard sales every week. The tagging system is excellent, and the automations feel natural. The free plan goes up to 1,000 subscribers, which is more generous than most of the others. If your business is more about long-term audience building than quick ecommerce sales, this one tends to feel the most comfortable.

Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) is the one many budget-conscious owners end up choosing. It gives you both email and SMS marketing in the same place, and the pricing is very reasonable. If you want to send text messages to customers along with emails, this is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to do it. It also handles transactional emails (order confirmations, shipping updates) very well. The interface isn’t as flashy as the others, but it gets the job done without unnecessary complexity.

Klaviyo Pros: Excellent revenue tracking, very powerful automations, great for ecommerce. Cons: Can feel overwhelming if you’re not selling products online.

ConvertKit Pros: Clean and focused on relationship building, generous free tier. Cons: Not the strongest for heavy ecommerce or transactional emails.

Brevo Pros: Great value, SMS + email together, strong transactional capabilities. Cons: Design templates feel a bit dated compared to Mailchimp and Klaviyo.

How to Decide Which One Is Right for You

Start with two simple questions:

  1. What is your main goal with email? (Building long-term relationships, driving ecommerce sales, or sending transactional messages?)
  2. How much are you willing to spend per month once you grow past the free limits?
  • Just starting and want something simple? → Mailchimp
  • Running an online store and want to track real revenue? → Klaviyo
  • Do you create content or sell digital products? → ConvertKit
  • You want both email and SMS on a tight budget? → Brevo

I always recommend testing with a small list first. Import 100–200 real subscribers and send a couple of actual campaigns. After a week or two, you’ll have a much better feel for which tool matches your style.
